Surfing the waves

There are several collective nouns for a group of pelicans, including a ‘brief’, ‘pod’, ‘scoop’, ‘squadron’ and ‘pouch’. No matter what they’re called, though, I can never get enough of watching them surf the waves. Given their size, I’m always struck by how beautifully graceful they are when they glide in formation. If you’re lucky enough to spot a large squadron (my favourite of the options) then you’ll be treated to a wonderfully synchronised arc as they repeatedly dip down towards the water then back up again. I find it absolutely mesmerising.
